India's batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has said that questions are asked on a team’s poor performances only when they lose a big match and not when things are going perfectly. His remarks came after India’s humiliating ten-wicket loss to England in the semis of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.
At the same time, the 1983 World Cup winner also mentioned that there are a lot of issues that need to be addressed going forward if India need to end their ICC title drought.

"None of these questions would have come if we had won the match. You lose one match and we start taking potshots at the team," Gavaskar said on India Today.
"I know there are issues that can be looked at, for example, the workload management thing. I think we should also look at the number of members we carry. Too many talking heads can confuse players. If we had gone to the final, we would have been talking about who should be playing in the XI," he added.
"We are very famous for these knee-jerk reactions and having a go at our team when we lose, don't think it's the right way. I know we need to look at measures to strengthen our teams and for that, if we have to take hard calls, other than you and me there is a selection committee that is appointed so they will have to take the hard calls," the cricketer-turned-broadcaster further added.
Moments after India’s ouster from the tournament, Sunil Gavaskar had said that some of the players who are in their mid-30s need to rethink whether they fit in the T20I squad’s scheme of things.
It is to be noted that only two of these 30+ players had performed consistently and they were- Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav. Apart from them, other senior players like skipper Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, Dinesh Karthik, and, Ravichandran Ashwin had a tournament to forget.
The Indian team showcased a defensive batting approach in the semis against England where they were 62/2 in the first ten overs. While Kohli did score a 40-ball 50, he was forced to play risk-free cricket with the top order struggling.
India’s next T20I assignment will be an away bilateral series against New Zealand starting Friday, November 18. The Men in Blue will be led by Hardik Pandya with some of the key players being rested for this tour.
