Who have won 'Player of the Match' award in finals in T20 World Cup history?

The 2022 T20 World Cup final is upon fans as England and Pakistan will tussle for the ultimate prize at the iconic MCG on November 13. While there will be several world-class players on display on the day, a special performance from an individual often does the bidding for their side. We list the players who have played a massive role in their side's triumph in the World Cup finale in its glorious history so far.

Irfan Pathan (2007)

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan was at the heart of India's triumphant campaign in the inaugural edition of the tournament. The left-arm pacer returned with impeccable bowling figures of 3/16 at Johannesberg to help the Men in Blue win the maiden T20 World Cup title against arch-rivals Pakistan. 

Shahid Afridi (2009)

Pakistan's mercurial all-rounder Shahid Afridi had a memorable campaign in the 2009 T20 World Cup and was named the player of the match for his decisive half-century against Sri Lanka in the final, along with an economical bowling spell at Lords.

Craig Kieswetter (2010)

Former England wicketkeeper-batter Craig Kieswettwer ended England's wait for an ICC trophy by guiding his side to a maiden T20 WC triumph against nemesis Australia. He was named the player of the match for his match-winning half-century in the second innings to complete a memorable chase.

Marlon Samuels (2012)

The controversial figure of Marlon Samuels led the charge for the West Indies against Sri Lanka to hand his side their first T20 title. The explosive batter scored a 56-ball 78 to guide his side to a competitive total.

Kumar Sangakkara (2014)

Former Sri Lankan batting great Kumar Sangakkara bowed out of the format after completing a match-winning half-century against India in the final to clinch his side's maiden title in T20Is.

Marlon Samuels (2016 T20 World Cup)

While Carlos Brathwaite made the headlines after his jaw-dropping power hitting against Ben Stokes in the final against England, Marlon Samuels was once again the hero of the Caribbean side. He was awarded the POTM trophy for his 85 runs off 66 deliveries.

Mitchell Marsh (2021)

Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh played the innings of his life to guide help Australia past their Trans Tasman rivals New Zealand in the finale. He was named the player of the match for his 77 runs off 50 balls.
