The upcoming 2026 season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will witness impact players being used in the tournament for the first time. The proposition to have the provision for impact substitutes in the upcoming edition was agreed upon by all five franchises taking part in the tournament after a meeting on Monday, June 01.
LPL is the latest T20 franchise league in the world to introduce the impact player rule. Under this, teams announce their playing XIs and a list of impact substitute options before the match, and a maximum of one player from the original XI is then subbed out to bring in another from the bench.
This rule was first introduced during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2022 before being adopted into the Indian Premier League in the 2023 edition. Several cricketers and experts have had mixed opinions regarding the impact player rule, but recently, there has been strong criticism voicing the role of all-rounders being limited. There are talks that IPL might soon bring an end to the impact player system.
Coming back to LPL, the league has now also mandated all the teams to field at least one player under the age of 23 to take the field for the season. This means that all franchises need to mandatorily have at least one player born on or after July 01, 2003, to make a part of their playing XI throughout the course of the tournament.
Both the newly introduced rules have come shortly after the LPL mandated players to participate in the tournament with the criterion of having a minimum number of followers on Instagram. This created immense controversy, and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had been bashed left, right, and centre for having players in the LPL not on the basis of cricketing skills but on their popularity on social media platforms. SLC had to soon withdraw the clause.
LPL 2026 is scheduled to kick off on Friday, July 17, with the opening game set to be played between Galle Gallants and SC Jaffna Kings.
