India’s campaign at the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has been smooth so far, securing a spot in the semifinals after back-to-back wins. However, ahead of their final group-stage match against New Zealand in Dubai, the side might see some changes in their playing XI due to some injury concerns.

Regular skipper Rohit Sharma is facing a potential hamstring injury, which could sideline him from the upcoming game. This could lead to vice-captain Shubman Gill stepping in as captain, marking his ODI captaincy debut for India.

Rohit's injury scare took place during India’s previous match against Pakistan on February 23. While chasing a ball in the early overs of Pakistan’s innings, he strained his hamstring. Although he continued on the field after some time, he was visibly uncomfortable. According to an Indian Express report, Rohit was the only batter to avoid batting in India’s training session on Wednesday. Instead, he was taking part in discussions with head coach Gautam Gambhir and underwent light jogging exercises.

Rahul, Pant, Sundar are in contention to open with Gill

The match against the Kiwis does carry importance in terms of finishing as Group A winners. However, with only a single rest day before India’s semi-final on March 4, the team may prioritize the veteran opener's recovery. If the skipper is rested, Gill will be seen taking the leadership role. The 24-year-old has been in exceptional form, scoring a century against Bangladesh and a solid 46 against Pakistan.

The Punjab-born has prior captaincy experience, leading India in the T20I series against Zimbabwe last year. Meanwhile, if Rohit is unavailable, the bigger question is, who will open alongside Gill? KL Rahul is a natural option, having played as an opener in the past. Another possibility is Rishabh Pant, who has opened in white-ball cricket before. Washington Sundar is also in contention for a spot.
