In India’s opening game against Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, opener Shubman Gill took quite some time to settle down but couldn’t capitalise on that. Wickets kept on falling from one end and hence, there was hardly any room for him to get going and hence, Gill was patient in his approach. However, the Punjab-born cricketer managed to score only 10 runs in 32 deliveries as Haris Rauf picked up his wicket in the 15th over of the match.
Analysing Gill’s knock, former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir stated that the 23-year-old needs to fix his technical flaw before making a mark on the international scene. He has been outstanding for team India in white-ball cricket in the past year, but only recently, his form has dipped in the limited-overs. Gambhir added that he understands that Gill had to slow down against Pakistan due to the match situation but reminded him that he cannot leave such a big gap between bat and pad in the coming times.
“It is a technical flaw but I believe he tried to play differently from his natural game because a lot of wickets had fallen from the other end. Rohit Sharma lost his wicket, then Virat Kohli lost his wicket and after that, Shreyas Iyer also got out," said Gautam Gambhir on Star Sports.
“So he was trying to build a partnership. It was a good ball as well but if you play while leaving such a big gap between bat and pad, a quality bowler will expose you. It's extremely necessary for Shubman Gill to work on this,” the 41-year-old further added.
Gill has to either commit with your feet or through your head position: Irfan Pathan
Former cricketer Irfan Pathan also expressed his disappointment with Shubman Gill’s dismissal. He suggested that the cricketer either has to commit with his feet or through head position but Gill failed to do either of those as Rauf rattled his stumps.
“You have to either commit with your feet or through your head position. We didn't see either of those things even when he was playing well and leaving deliveries. So that is a small thing that he can work on,” Pathan mentioned.
