A renowned Pakistan cricket fan, affectionately known as Basheer 'Chacha' (uncle), found himself in a strange situation at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad recently. Basheer, who also holds US citizenship, had come to welcome the Pakistan cricket team ahead of their warm-up match for the ICC Cricket World Cup.
As the clock approached 8 pm, the Pakistan team came out from the airport terminal to the warm embrace of supporters. Among the crowd was Basheer, full of excitement at the sight of his beloved Men in Green. In his enthusiasm, he waved the Pakistan national flag to show his support.
However, the sight of the flag waving caught the attention of the RGIA police, who swiftly moved to detain Basheer. Concerned about public safety, they apprehended him, leading to a temporary interruption in the joyful reception.
Basheer Chacha, the dedicated fan, cooperated with the authorities once they explained the misunderstanding. He clarified his identity as a passionate supporter of the Pakistan cricket team who had travelled to India for the match. In an effort to resolve the situation, he presented his travel documents, tickets, and identity cards, helping to put authorities at ease.
Following this brief hiccup, Basheer was released from custody, and the warm welcome continued. Meanwhile, in preparation for the upcoming Pakistan vs New Zealand match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal on September 29, strict security measures have been put in place.
A formidable force of 200 police personnel has been deployed to ensure the safety of all involved. The high level of security extends not only to the spectators but also to the players themselves, as per the requests of the BCCI and HCA. This warm-up match will be played without any spectators because of security issues.
The much-awaited ODI World Cup 2023 is all set to start on October 5 with a match between the last-time finalists, New Zealand and England, at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad.
