A game or two is not going to define Shreyas Iyer, just about him finding that one inning: Abhishek Nayar

Former India cricketer Abhishek Nayar gave his take on Shreyas Iyer's performance in the first ODI against Australia in Mohali on September 22. India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after outplaying Pat Cummins and Co. by five wickets.

Nayar stated that Shreyas would understand that he made a misstep in the game and hopes he will bounce back in the upcoming games. Notably, the middle-order batter was run out after scoring three runs off eight balls while chasing a 277-run target.

“He's a professional cricketer and being part of the IPL setup for a long time and this Indian team for a couple of years now, he understands that you made a mistake and the communication wasn't great. It maybe wasn't the right time to pick that single. India were in a comfortable position. But you expect Shreyas Iyer to come back from this,” Nayar told JioCinema.

The 39-year-old went on to say that Shreyas just needs to find that one innings to get back his form. He added that one or two games cannot define his capability.

“He has come back before as well and I am sure he is going to be in a relaxed space because of the environment in this Indian team is where they are backing players. He knows he has done well over a period of time. A game or two is not going to define Shreyas Iyer. It's just about him finding that one inning. Iyer has done it for India in this format,” he added.

Speaking about the match, India skipper KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bowl first. Star pacer Mohammed Shami claimed a five-wicket haul as India bundled out Australia for 276 runs in 50 overs. India got off to a flying start, with Shubman Gill (74) and Ruturaj Gaikward (71) putting up a 100-run plus partnership for the opening wicket. Later Suryakumar Yadav (50) and Rahul (58*) scored half-centuries as India chased down the target with eight balls remaining.
