Indian paceman Ishant Sharma emphasized the importance of Virat Kohli's batting performance in the upcoming WTC (2023-25) cycle. With Kohli experiencing a lean run in the past few years, Sharma believes that the former India skipper needs to score runs to make a significant impact.

In recent times, Kohli has struggled to find his rhythm in Test cricket, however, he showed glimpses of his brilliance earlier this year with a magnificent 186-run knock against Australia in Ahmedabad. As the first Test against West Indies commenced in Roseau, Kohli remained unbeaten on 36 at stumps on Day 2, and he would be hoping to break his overseas century drought when the play resumes on Day 3.

When asked about Kohli's role in grooming the young players during the new WTC cycle, Ishant stressed the importance of senior players leading by example.

"The most important thing is that if you are a senior player, you will first have to score your own runs, or else the juniors will also ask what is the point of you being a senior," he said while commentating on JioCinema.

Despite Kohli's recent struggles, Ishant expressed confidence in his ability to deliver. He cited Kohli's current mental state and batting form as factors that will likely contribute to his success in the upcoming matches. Ishant also praised Kohli's mentoring skills, stating

"He knows how to groom youngsters because he has captained the Indian team for so many runs."

To support his claim, Ishant pointed out how Kohli had nurtured young talents like Rishabh Pant in the past. Rather than imposing a specific approach, Kohli encouraged players to trust their technique and play their natural game. Ishant emphasized the significance of a captain's backing, stating:

"If your captain backs you, it becomes a very important thing as a player."

During his captaincy tenure, Kohli led India in 68 Tests, securing victory in 40 matches while losing only 17 games. His leadership skills have been widely acknowledged, and his ability to guide and motivate young cricketers has played a crucial role in India's success on numerous occasions.

As the new WTC cycle unfolds, Indian team looks up to Kohli to not only regain his prolific form with the bat but also mentor and inspire the young talents. Kohli's success will undoubtedly have a great effect on the team's performance.
