Australia is in total control after dominating the Day 1 of the Lord's Test match against England. Australia made 339 runs in 83 overs as the first day of the 2nd Ashes Test concluded and in return, England could manage to take just 5 wickets.
Early in the day, England was poor in the field as they gave a lifeline to Usman Khwaja and David Warner by dropping their catches. Joe Root and Ollie Pope also failed to convert two difficult chances given by Australian batters. While Khawaja's dropped chance didn't hurt England much but David Warner made good use of the lifeline as he scored 66 off 88 balls which gave Australia a good start in challenging overcast conditions.
Michael Vaughan, a former England cricketer, criticized Ben Stokes' England team and remarked that starting on Day 2, England needs to be considerably more adept in the field.
"England can make a comeback again, but I'm concerned. They will need to be sharper in the field, and I'm interested to see how are they going do it," Vaughan remarked on BBC's Test Match Special.
Talking about the conditions for the batting at Lord's, Vaughn stated that it is only going to get harder for the batters to bat on as the match will go ahead at Lord's. Therefore it's crucial for England to stay alert at all times.
"I do believe that over the following few days, this pitch will get harder to bat on and I'm concerned for England. Right now, things are quite difficult. At Edgbaston, they were turned off, and today, they weren't turned on at crucial times," added Vaughan.
Earlier in the day, visitors had a good start as Warner displayed remarkable resilience by scoring 66 runs off 88, a crucial contribution made under challenging circumstances after England had the toss in their favour at Lord's.
Steve Smith and Alex Carey will start the day for Australia on Day 2. While Smith is batting at 85* off 149 balls, Carey is currently at 11* off 34 balls. After winning a thrilling match at Edgbaston, Australia will try to extend its lead to 2-0 at Lord's.
