The 59th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a clash between the David Warner-led Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday, May 13. Punjab kept their hopes for playoff qualification alive as they registered an emphatic win against Delhi.

Coming in to bat, Punjab posted 167 runs on the board, thanks to the magnificent knock by 22-year-old Prabhsimran Singh that was crucial for the side. Prabhsimran amassed 103 runs in just 65 balls to propel Punjab to a respectable total. Furthermore, Sam Curran was the second-highest run-getter in the side with 20 runs to his name.

Seeing Prabhsimran’s knock, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag came forward to give his take on the 22-year-old batter. He also lambasted Sam Curran for his continued subpar performances in the tournament. Sehwag opined that Curran has not been able to justify his price tag.

Sam Curran was roped in by Punjab for INR 18.5 crore in the IPL 2023 auction. In the 12 matches that the 24-year-old has played in the IPL 2023, he has scored 216 runs and taken seven wickets.

"Punjab Kings have benefited from the chances that they've given to Prabhsimran. Now, he has to be consistent. And I think the PBKS will benefit a lot from such a player. When he came for the first time, he was bought for a lot of money (INR 4.8 crore). This time around, he fetched quite less (INR 60 lakh). But he proved his talent today," Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

"He showed that he can hit those centuries. Again, he was bought for INR 60 lakh, and if a player fetching that much scores hundreds and wins you a couple of games, there can be nothing better than that. You bought Sam Curran for 18.5 crore; what has he done?" he added.

After their 31-run victory against Delhi, Punjab Kings have narrowly kept their hopes for a spot in the knockout stages of the tournament alive. The Shikhar Dhawan-led side finds itself in sixth place in the IPL points table with 12 points from 12 matches.
