'The more positive I am, the better I am with my feet' - Travis Head takes inspiration from England for Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Australia's middle-order talisman Travis Head is looking to take a leaf out of England's explosive approach against the spinners in the upcoming Test series against hosts India in February. The southpaw is looking to better his red-ball average in the subcontinent, which took a massive dent after a few disappointing outings during his previous tours of Asia.

While the likes of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have been doing the bulk of the scoring at the top of the order, Travis Head has reveled in the role of the enforcer, taking the attack to the opposition bowlers. However, the southpaw remembers his struggles against the slower bowlers during his last visit to the subcontinent and is looking at Ben Stokes-led England for inspiration.

“Watching the way England played in Pakistan, I’ve probably looked back and wasn’t as positive as I’d like to be against spin in those series. I feel like the way I played throughout this series against spin – I know it’s completely different being in Australia – but the more positive I am, the better I am with my feet and the better I am in defense,” Head was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald ahead of the team’s departure for India.

I think I may have been a bit on the defensive side in Pakistan and Sri Lanka: Head

The explosive batter acknowledged being a bit defensive against the spinners during his previous visits to the subcontinent, but is willing to adapt to the conditions and play positive cricket this time around. While the batters are expected to pile on the runs in the upcoming series, he feels that a quickfire 40 or 50 could make the difference in a low-scoring affair.

“I think I may have been a bit on the defensive side in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which you’ve always got a ball on your name over there. But get over there, we’ve got a long time to get settled over there, and get the lay of the land and understand what my role might be. It could be low-scoring, it could be high-scoring, you might need to get big scores, or a 40, 50, 60 might win you a Test match,” he added.
