Young Indian opener Shubman Gill has further enhanced his reputation on the international stage after his glittering maiden ton in the second innings of the ongoing Chattogram Test. Gill was drafted into the playing eleven following the injury to skipper Rohit Sharma. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra reckoned that Gill's recent success is bad news for KL Rahul, who failed to impress in the first Test.
The 23-year-old Shubman Gill is becoming an invaluable asset for the Indian team and did his reputation another favor by smashing his maiden century in the longest form of the game against Bangladesh. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra praised the youngster's achievement and feels he is a threat to KL Rahul's opening spot when Rohit Sharma returns to the side.
"It is a problem for KL Rahul that he has had two low scores. He got an inside edge in the first innings and got out to the bouncer trap in the second innings. He is an amazing player but with the job Shubman Gill has done, who will go out when Rohit Sharma comes back? Whenever you give him a chance, he grabs it with both hands, and gives you a sweet headache, that how will you keep him out?" Chopra said in his Youtube video.
I feel he is a No. 3 or No. 4 batter, for a long, long, long time: Aakash Chopra
The cricketer-turned-expert shed light on the batting technique of the young Indian star, stating it was influenced by white-ball cricket. He feels that Gill can serve the Indian team as a middle-order batter for a long-time team due to his aggressive style of play.
"What makes Shubman Gill special? He plays extremely cleanly. His playing style aligns with white-ball cricket, in that his feet and body remain beside the ball, and the path is always clean for the bat's downswing. He can play as an opener on subcontinental pitches and will score runs as well, but when I see him closely, I feel he is a No. 3 or No. 4 batter, for a long, long, long time," he added
