Australia’s ace spinner Jess Jonassen was ruled out of the squad ahead of the second T20I against India after injuring her right hamstring. Australia are currently touring India for a five-match T20I series and they’re leading the series 1-0 after having won the first game. Jonassen left the squad on Friday and has flown back to Brisbane.

It surely is a major blow for the Australian side as Jonassen was currently one of their in-form players. But in her absence, the Aussies have called up Amanda-Jade Wellington. She will be joining the side before the third T20I and will be a part of the 15-member squad for the remainder of the series that is happening across two venues in Mumbai.

Jonassen expected to be back by January for Pakistan series

Jonassen picked up the injury in the first innings of the first T20I while fielding, at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Mumbai. In the first game, which concluded on Friday, December 9, Jonassen bowled only two overs, while conceding 18 runs at an economy of 9.00. But nevertheless, the Australian top-order batters covered up for everything with their brilliant performances as they chased down the 173-run target to win the game by a whopping nine wickets.

“She’s since been assessed and it’s evident that the timeframes required for a return during this series are too short. Jess will be unavailable for the remainder of the series and will return to Brisbane to continue her rehab,” Australia team's physiotherapist Kate Beerworth was quoted by Cricket Australia.

The injury is not very serious and thus, Jonassen will be expected to return to the side in January for the home series against Pakistan, which includes an ODI and a T20I series. Her successful recovery and return in January will also make her available for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 which is set to take place in South Africa in February.

The two teams are set to face each other on Sunday, December 11, at the same venue for the second T20I.
