The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has received over 600 e-mail applications for the five-member selection panel. Interestingly, the apex board was shocked to find profiles of MS Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar and even Pakistan's Inzamam-ul-Haq for the post when the department opened up their mailbox.
However, the applications from the high-profile players turned out to be spam email ids from imposters. In any case, the Cricket Advisory Committee is expected to shortlist 10 names for the mentioned role.
"Around 600 applications have been received and some of them have come from fake ids claiming to be Dhoni, Sehwag and Tendulkar. They are simply wasting BCCI's time by doing that. The CAC will shortlist 10 candidates and then choose the final five. The process will be completed soon," a BCCI source was quoted by Times of India.
Previous panel continues to remain in operation
Earlier in November, the BCCI sacked the entire selection committee led by Chetan Sharma in response to the screeching halt team India endured in the T20 World Cup 2022. Prior to the marquee event, India also failed to reach the final of the 2022 Asia Cup in September and therefore, the management decided to make a few changes within.
Chetan Sharma, the former Indian cricketer, was selected as chairman of the selection committee in December 2020. However, during his reign the Indian men's team failed to win any silverware. Harvinder Singh (Central Zone), Sunil Joshi (South Zone), and Debasis Mohanty (East Zone) were also part of the sacked selection committee.
Meanwhile, the panel continues to remain in operation as the successors are yet to be finalised. Moreover, the panel followed the first round of the Ranji Trophy and is watching the second round as well, whereas Debasish Mohanty is presently in Kolkata watching the Bengal vs Himachal Pradesh contest.
