India and Zimbabwe will lock horns in the last match of the Super 12, which is the 42nd match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. India started their campaign at the same venue against Pakistan and bagged a thrilling victory. The Men in Blue are very close to confirming their semi-final berth, and a win against Zimbabwe would land them into the semis.
As for Zimbabwe, their chances of qualification are less, and alongside India, South Africa is the next team in contention for the semi-final from their group. Zimbabwe, so far in the tournament, have won just one game against Pakistan. They are currently placed fifth on the points table with three points to their name, as they bagged a point when their game against South Africa was washed out midway.
India faced Bangladesh in their previous game, which turned out to be a rain-curtailed match. Bangladesh was in the driver’s seat in the second innings, before rain stopped the play. As the game resumed, Indian bowlers started picking up wickets at regular intervals and halted Bangladesh’s momentum. The game came down to the final ball of the final over before India claimed a win.
Zimbabwe have been a part of multiple thrillers this season. Their game against Pakistan was surely the highlight of their T20 World Cup campaign this year. As for their qualification, they will need a no result in the Pakistan v/s Bangladesh game, South Africa to lose against the Netherlands, and also win against India by a huge margin to improve their NRR and rise above Pakistan and South Africa in the points table.
Little showers of rain expected to interrupt the game
As per weather.com, there are chances of light showers at 7:00 PM local time in Melbourne, which is when the game begins, but it will be mostly cloudy thereafter. Hence, the chances of the game not happening are very less. Rain might delay the toss, but the game is unlikely to end up in a washout.
The Melbourne Cricket Ground offered an even track for batters and bowlers. Bowlers will get an advantage with the new ball in the earlier phase, and the batters will have to be patient while playing their shots. The MCG has big boundaries, and thus the spinners might play a crucial role in this track.
