The Indian team squared up against England in the second semi-final in Adelaide. While the inclusion of explosive wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik raised a few eyebrows, former Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer felt that the Indian team should have gone in with a leg spinner in the ongoing tournament.
Star Indian leggie Yuzvendra Chahal was one of India's most vital bowlers in the lead-up to the tournament in Australia. But the 32-year-old has not been given an opportunity to showcase his talents in the mega ICC event as he featured in just one warm-up game for India. Former Indian cricketer and wicketkeeper-batter Farokh Engineer feels that the team could've played either Chahal or Ravi Bishnoi in the tournament as a World Cup-winning side needs a leg spinner in their ranks.
"Seeing that the track is gonna get slower, I would've preferred Yuzvendra Chahal or Ravi Bishnoi over Ravichandran Ashwin. But I would've played them a game or two earlier, not in the semi-final straightaway. They would've been more effective. To win a World Cup you need a leg-spinner and we don't have one in the team right now. But all in all, we have got a good squad and just need a bit of luck in a big tournament like this," Farokh Engineer told on BatBricks7 presents ‘Run Ki Runneeti show’ on CricTracker.
India have persisted with the all-round pair of Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin
The Indian team has persisted with the combination of Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel in the spin bowling department and even though Axar hasn't had the greatest of tournaments, Ashwin has done more than enough to cement his place in the side. Chahal would've been in with a shout, but because of the batting capabilities of both the specialist spinners, they hold a slight edge over the leggie.
