Former White Fern Lesley Murdoch has been elected as the new president of New Zealand Cricket (NZC) following their annual general meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, November 9. Taking history into context, Murdoch is the second woman ever to take up the role after the outgoing president, Debbie Hockley.
The annual general meeting also witnessed the appointments of Sarah Beaman as the new director and the re-election of director Kevin Malloy. Meanwhile, board member Jackie Lloyd bid adieu to the organisation and it was one of the highlights of the AGM.
Beaman previously served as the captain of the New Zealand U-23 Women's cricket team and was also the coach of the Auckland Hearts. She has been an integral part of the Junior Board and Women's Board of NZC.
Murdoch comes with lot of experience
Murdoch comes with a lot of experience both on and off the field. During her playing days Murdoch played six Test matches and 25 One-day Internationals for the White Ferns and also led the unit in both formats. Murdoch was also fortunate enough to represent the hockey team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
As far as the management side of things are concerned, she was New Zealand Cricket's vice-president since 2021 and was administering things really well before being elected for her newest role. She is also a trustee of the New Zealand Community Trust.
One of the highlights of her post-retirement career was the fact that she played an instrumental role as a member of the panel that modernised the old New Zealand Cricket Council in the year 1995.
Born in 1958, Murdoch made her Test debut against their Trans-Tasman rivals Australia in Sydney in January 1979. She represented Canterbury in the domestic circuit and made her ODI debut versus England on January 10, 1982 in Auckland. Earlier in July, New Zealand Cricket in what was a momentous occasion announced equal pay for its male and female cricketers.
