Even though Adelaide Strikers failed to defeat Melbourne Renegades in the fifth match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) on Sunday, October 16, Australian pacer Darcie Brown created history by bowling the fastest delivery in the history of WBBL. She clocked 127.2 km/h during the match.
Despite being in form, the 19-year-old failed to pick any wicket in the match. The speedster gave away 28 runs at an economy of 9.33 in the three overs that she bowled. Defending a target of just 127 runs, Brown and co. fought hard till the end but failed to defend six runs in the final over of the match.
Sophie Molineux leads Renegades to victory
Coming after a ten-month-long injury, skipper Sophie Molineux once again stepped up and delivered a match-winning knock as Renegades beat Strikers by four wickets to win their first match of the season. Deciding to bowl first, Sophie led the attack and picked up four wickets in her four overs. Bowling at an economy of 5.80, the 24-year-old gave away just 23 runs. Meanwhile her teammate, Shabnim Ismail picked up two wickets.
Sophie also helped Renegades get off to a good start with the bat. Harmanpreet Kaur, their leading run-scorer of the last season was absent because of her Asia Cup duties but Sophie didn’t let her absence come into play.
The captain played a sensible knock of 32 off 35 balls and played the anchor's role while others tried to clear the rope. The plan worked as they won their first match of the season. Based on her performance, the Australian was adjudged the Player of the Match.
After missing out on the final last year, the Renegades will aim to turn the tables this time around and this win will give them the confidence to do well in future games. The team will next play against Brisbane Heat at Ray Mitchell Oval in Mackay on October 18.
