The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah made a breakthrough decision as he announced equal pay for the Indian women’s cricket team as their male counterparts. The centrally contracted women cricketers are set to earn INR 15 lakh for a Test, 6 lakhs for an ODI and 3 lakhs for a T20I.

However, this was not the case earlier as the women's side earned INR 1 lakh for an ODI or T20I appearance, and 2.5 lakh for a Test match. The Indian cricket board called this step as a ‘the first step towards tackling discrimination’.

Asghar Afghan reacts on boards decision for equal pay

The pathbreaking decision made by the BCCI is being given importance by many cricketing boards and members of the fraternity. Former Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan too did not hold back in praising the board and voiced that BCCI wants the women’s team to ‘dominate’ world cricket just like the men’s team.

“India’s culture believes that women play more cricket and sports and since the cricket craze is humongous, everyone hopes to get an equal chance. Also, India wants that their women’s team to dominate the world cricket and play good cricket just as the men’s team have been doing. This is a major decision for the women’s team and BCCI has made a fantastic call,” said Asghar while speaking on 'BatBricks7 presents Run Ki Runneeti' on CricTracker.

Keeping aside the equal pay, BCCI has also planned the inaugural Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) potentially scheduled to be held in 2023. The board is further holding talks for TV rights and franchise ownership. Undoubtedly, with the league in place, the women’s team will get to play more cricket to garner experience, and this would further give more chance to the young sensations of the nation to cement their place in the women’s team.
