After the massive success of franchise-based league tournaments of India, Australia, and England, South Africa is all set to get going with SA20, the inaugural edition of their franchise cricket tournament which will be played in the T20 format. The board is set to conduct the player auctions on Monday, September 19 and the players will finally get a home today.
MI Cape Town, Durban Super Giants, Johannesburg Super Kings, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the six teams competing in the tournament's inaugural season. The competition will take place in the six cities that the teams represent (Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Paarl, Pretoria, and Gqeberha) and the tournament will be held between January to February 2023.
The organizations that own the Indian Premier League teams own the franchises at the SA20. Some of them are growing their operations by acquiring franchises in the CPL and the International League T20, another new T20 league that has been introduced by the UAE (ILT20). Notably, all six teams at the SA20 are owned by IPL-based franchises.
