England and Australia continued their ongoing ODI series by facing off in the second ODI. Both sides locked horns at the Headingley Stadium, in Leeds, on Saturday, September 21, and the clash began with Australia coming in to bat first after losing the toss.
The side opened its innings with openers Matthew Short and Travis Head scoring 29 runs each, with Mitchell Marsh playing a good knock, adding 60 runs onto the scoreboard. After the good start, veteran batter Steve Smith was sent packing for just four runs, with Marnus Labuschagne adding 19 runs on the scoreboard.
Furthermore, it was Alex Cary's knock that stood out in the middle order. The star wicketkeeper batter came out to bat and managed to score 74 runs in 67 deliveries. All-rounder Glenn Maxwell was unable to make an impact after he was dismissed for just seven runs as well.
With a few performances throughout the innings, Australia managed to reach a total of 270 runs in the first innings. As for England, Brydon Carse was the highest wicket-taker for his side in the first innings with three wickets to his name. Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, and Jacob Bethell took two wickets each, with Olly Stone striking once.
England top order collapsed under chasing pressure
Coming in to chase a target of 271, England saw their openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett depart for scores of 12 and 32, respectively. Furthermore, things started to go from bad to worse after Will Jacks was sent packing for a duck and Harry Brook added just four runs on the board.

Furthermore, Jamie Smith added 49 runs in a bid to stay in the middle for as long as he possibly could have. While on the other hand, Liam Livingstone departed for a duck. England’s hopes of chasing the target looked slimmer by the minute, and with Jacob Bethell and Brydon Carse adding 25 and 26 runs on the board, respectively, England were limited to a score of 202 runs in the second innings before they were bundled out.
Australia registered their second win of the ODI series, defeating the hosts by 68 runs, and the side will hope for another good showing in the next game to wrap up the series.
