The defending champions England (ENG) started their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on a drastic note. As a result, they are on the verge of crashing out of the mega cricket carnival from the league stage itself. However, on Friday (June 14), the Jos Buttler-led side picked up an incredible win to make a strong statement in Antigua. Notably the English side clashed with minnows Oman (OMA), where they sealed the game inside just four overs to keep them alive.
In what was a complete domination, after winning the toss, England ran through Oman's batting unit to skittle them for a meagre 47 runs. Thereafter, while chasing the target opener Phil Salt played a whirlwind six-hitting knock to give England the chance to boost their Net Run Rate (NRR) significantly which may play a crucial role in the days ahead to come. Though Oman managed to dismiss Phil Salt and Will Jacks in quick succession, skipper Jos Buttler wasted no time in smacking the bowlers to seal the game in quick time. Now the bigger question of the moment- What does England need to do to qualify for the Super Eight rounds?
What does Bangladesh need to do to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 round?
Given that England are dependent on the result of the Australia versus Scotland game to start with, they need to win against Oman within 5.2 overs to shoot up their current NRR. They managed to do that quite dominatingly as they finished the game in just 19 balls. As a result, England have now leapfrogged Scotland in terms of the run rate scenario in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 marquee event.
However, they are still on the verge of getting ousted from the Group stage of the T20 World Cup 2024, should Scotland manage to beat Australia which will push them ahead of England in terms of points accumulated in the World Cup points table. Currently, England's NRR have shot up to +3.08 from the previous -1.80. to edge past Scotland who currently have a net run rate of +2.164.

Furthermore, England not only hope to see Australia beat Scotland, but they also have to play against Namibia in their next fixture. Hence, despite all the good news coming in, the English side still need to win their next game to keep themselves alive in the ongoing T20 World Cup by collecting five points and becoming the superior side to Scotland who will then be tied with their neighbours on the points table.
Interestingly, there is one more scenario which can ruin the party for England. Given that some of the games have been washed out in the ongoing mega event, the upcoming fixture can help Scotland to get through to the Super Eight round should rains play possums and the game ends in a No Result.
