With the deadline for the application for the new head coach of the senior India men’s team, it has been reported that the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is keeping their options open. The job of finding a new head coach seems to be more challenging than once thought.

According to the sources, Gautam Gambhir, Stephen Fleming, Justin Langer, and Mahela Jayawardene have the BCCI interested as probable head coaches. Interestingly, every name stated above has lucrative jobs within IPL franchises, and the task of travelling with the Indian team for 10 months a year until the next ODI World Cup in 2027 is a big issue.

"There has been no formal communication with the potential candidates. All these coaches are biding their time and weighing options. But it seems Gambhir's stocks have risen. It is likely that the board officials will speak with Gambhir in Ahmedabad where he is with KKR for the IPL playoffs," a source in the know told The Times of India.

"If people are talking about Gambhir's friction with Virat Kohli, it can be confirmed that the two have always got along well off the field. Even after the bust-up during an IPL match last year, the two were made to sit down and sort out any issue if they indeed had one," the source added.

Notably, after Anil Kumble was appointed the head coach over Ravi Shastri in 2016, the BCCI never had to sort and choose between candidates. Shastri was the clear choice between 2017-21 with then skipper Kohli's backing. Furthermore, Rahul Dravid was elevated from NCA head in 2021 after the BCCI officials convinced him during the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai.

However, the situation is quite different now, as the BCCI has some decisions to make and choose a head coach from the list of candidates that they have on their plate.
