WPL 2024, Match 10 Review: Lanning, Jonassen take Capitals to the top of the table

Game 10 of the ongoing WPL (Women’s Premier League) 2024 featured a clash between Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Giants at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, March 3. The clash began with Delhi Capitals coming in to bat first after losing the toss. 

The side got off to a subpar start as opener Shafali Verma was sent packing early for just 13 runs in nine deliveries. However, skipper Meg Lanning stabilised the ship after the side’s poor start. The veteran batter scored 55 runs in 41 deliveries. 

Alice Capsey added 27 runs to the board, with Annabel Sutherland scoring 20. Star Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues was unable to make an impact after she departed after scoring just seven runs. In the first innings, Delhi Capitals managed to amass 163 runs and lost eight wickets in the process. 

As for Gujarat Giants, Meghna Singh was the highest wicket-taker for her side in the first innings with four wickets to her name. Ashleigh Gardner took two wickets, with Tanuja Kanwar and Mannat Kashyap striking once each.

Aiming to chase down the target of 164, Gujarat Giants got off to a horrid start as openers Beth Mooney and Laura Wolvaardt were dismissed for 12 and zero runs, respectively. Furthermore, Phoebe Litchfield and Veda Krishnamurthy were dismissed for 15 and 12 runs, respectively. 

Ashleigh Gardner came in and played a resilient knock to keep the hopes alive for the Giants. Gardner scored 40 runs in 31 deliveries; however, the rest of the batters could not amount to much. Kathryn Bryce was dismissed for just three runs, with Tanuja Kanwar scoring 13 as Gujarat Giants only managed to score 138 runs in the second innings, as Delhi Capitals won the game by 25 runs.

For the winners, Jess Jonassen and Radha Yadav were the highest wicket takers with three wickets each. Shikha Pandey and Arundhati Reddy struck once each as Delhi Capitals registered a brilliant win.
