In a major setback for the Karachi Kings, the franchise are facing a double blow as they gear up for their opening fixture in the upcoming PSL 2024. It has been confirmed that two of their overseas players, Tabraiz Shamsi and Jamie Overton, will have limited availability, impacting the team's strategy for the tournament.
Tabraiz Shamsi, the South African wrist-spinner, is set to miss the second half of the PSL as he is required to return home for South Africa's domestic T20 competition starting on March 8. The news comes as a surprise for Karachi Kings, who initially believed Shamsi would be available for the entire tournament. Shamsi is expected to feature in the first six games for the Kings but will be unavailable for the crucial latter part of the tournament.
ESPNcricinfo has reported that Cricket South Africa (CSA) has only issued No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to players for a limited period, contributing to Shamsi's partial unavailability. Karachi Kings now find themselves in a race against time to secure a replacement for the wrist-spinner, aiming to strengthen their spin department.
The situation worsens for the Kings as English all-rounder Jamie Overton has been withdrawn from the entire PSL 2024 season. Surrey, Overton's county, withdrew his NOC, citing the need for him to be fit and ready for the County Championship season beginning on April 5. Overton, who spent the winter playing T20 cricket, suffered a minor shoulder injury in the ILT20.

These player withdrawals add to the challenges faced by teams in this year's PSL, with Lahore Qalandars' Rashid Khan and Reece Topley also withdrawing earlier. The limited pool of overseas players have been further strained due to South Africa's insistence on centrally contracted players participating in their domestic league.
The PSL is set to kick off on February 17 in Lahore, culminating in the final in Karachi on March 18. As Karachi Kings regroup to navigate these unforeseen challenges, the cricketing fraternity eagerly awaits the unfolding drama of PSL 2024.
