India's dynamic white-ball batter and T20I star, Suryakumar Yadav, has suffered a setback as he will miss the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan due to an ankle injury. Additionally, he is expected to miss the entire domestic season and possibly the initial phase of the IPL due to a sports hernia. Yadav is set to undergo surgery for the same in Germany.
As per a source, Suryakumar Yadav was recently diagnosed with a sports hernia and is currently recovering at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In a few days, he will head to Munich for surgery. This rules him out for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy and potentially the initial IPL games with the Mumbai Indians
“SKY was recently diagnosed with sports hernia. He is currently recuperating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In two-three days, he will fly for Munich, Germany, to get operated for it. It means that he certainly won’t be playing for Mumbai this season in the Ranji Trophy and is likely to miss the initial games for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL,” a source in the BCCI told as quoted by TOI.
Sports hernias, though lacking an actual hernia, involve muscle, ligament, or tendon tears in the groin or lower abdomen. Often occurring in vigorous sports like soccer and football, they result from pelvis twisting with planted feet. KL Rahul, India's star wicketkeeper batter, also underwent sports hernia surgery in Germany in 2022.
“With the T20 World Cup in June, Surya will be given all the time to recover properly. He is crucial to India’s chances in the T20 World Cup,” the source added.
Suryakumar Yadav suffered an ankle injury during the final T20I in Johannesburg against South Africa. Despite this setback, Indian cricket fans are optimistic about his recovery and contributions in future tournaments. It remains to be seen if he can get back in time for the IPL 2024.
