Despite playing incredibly well in the recently concluded ODI World Cup, India failed to win the cup following a poor batting performance on the night of the finals. However, Rohit Sharma has been lauded for his captaincy in the tournament and the fearless brand of cricket he played in the tournament. However, with the end of the World Cup, the BCCI officials are eager to set the roadmap for the future.

As things stand, the officials are set to discuss with Rohit Sharma about his plans in white-ball cricket. The opener was given the role of a captain in 2021 and had the main task of helping India do well in the T20 World Cup 2022 and the ODI World Cup 2023. Rahul Dravid was appointed as the head coach for the meantime but the duo failed to clinch either of the trophies. Thus, BCCI’s plan is now to understand more about Rohit’s future and take a call about India’s roadmap going forward.

As per sources close to The Times of India, Rohit has already communicated to chief selector Ajit Agarkar and other officials that he is fine with not being considered for T20Is. However, winning the ODI World Cup was always the dream for the 36-year-old. By the time the tournament returns, Rohit will be 40, which may force him to sit out.

However, the Champions Trophy is just two years away and that is something that the Nagpur-born can consider. In the meantime, he can groom a younger player but with Hardik prone to injuries, BCCI may look at alternatives.

“As of now, it seems Rohit will be focusing a lot of his energy on the Test format for the next cycle of the World Test Championship which runs till 2025. Grooming a captain for the longer formats is a key part of the agenda. With Hardik Pandya prone to injuries, selectors may look for options in ODIs,” a source told The Times of India.
