Chasing 198 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last league game of IPL 2023, young Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill smashed a terrific century and helped his team win the match by six wickets. Notably, batting first, the home team lost a couple of early wickets but Virat Kohli reigned supreme, hitting his second consecutive century in the tournament. Based on his incredible batting, RCB posted a defendable total on board but Gill absolutely changed the complexion of the game in the second innings by playing some phenomenal cricket.
Talking about the Punjab-born cricketer, former India international Sunil Gavaskar lauded the cricketer for hitting a century under pressure. He also added that the cricketer played some breathtaking cricket on Sunday (May 21) and to be able to bat better than Kohli, it needs some talent and the 73-year-old believes that Gill possesses that.
“What we should be talking about is Shubman Gill's batting because he got a hundred under pressure. I don't think we should be concerned about the selection for T20 because the next T20I, at least as far as the World Cup is concerned is more than a year away.
“So I don't think we should be too concerned about it because what that man Shubman Gill did yesterday (Sunday) was simply breathtaking. To be able to bat better than what Virat Kohli had done takes something special and that's what he did,” Gavaskar stated as quoted by India Today.
Shubman Gill’s batting was so smooth, it was so elegant: Gavaskar
Gavaskar believes that Kohli was trying to play an aggressive brand of cricket which was terrific as it was more about power hitting but Gill was all about being elegant in the middle. Gavaskar also added that the management should start looking at Gill as he is the future of Indian cricket.
“Kohli's innings earlier was unbelievable, absolutely terrific. While it was more about power hitting, with Shubman Gill it was so smooth, it was so elegant, there was not a foot put wrong. It was just sublime batting. I think we should be talking more about that than worrying about whether Kohli deserves a place in the team or not. I think now is the time to look at the future and that future is Shubman Gill,” Gavaskar added.
Notably, the 23-year-old has hit 680 runs so far in IPL 2023, and with that, he is currently second in the IPL Orange Cap race.
