The 51st match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a clash between the defending champions Gujarat Titans and the Krunal Pandya-led Lucknow Super Giants at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 7.
Batting first, Gujarat notched up a mammoth 227 runs on the board. It was the unbeaten knock of star Indian batter Shubman Gill that propelled the side to a huge score. Gill amassed 94* runs in 51 deliveries to give the side a brilliant start. However, former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull was of the opinion that Gujarat could have gone further had Rahul Tewatia come in to bat.
The 53-year-old has often questioned the likes of Virat Kohli, Babar Azam, and many others for slowing their innings down when they approach a landmark in T20 cricket. He also explained the importance of the retired-out rule and how teams should use it to ensure that the hitters come into the game at the right time.
"Shubman was getting tired. He wasn't able to hit the boundaries as much as he could. And it can happen. Listen...it might be controversial, but I am waiting for the day when a bloke gets 75 or 80 off 45 balls and is cooked after the afternoon heat, which is 45 degrees, and hence quite can't get there, so he says, 'Okay Tewatia, you are out there.' Retire him out," Doull told Cricbuzz.
Gujarat Titans defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 56 runs
Talking about the game, apart from Gill’s excellent knock, veteran batter Wriddhiman Saha also scored 81 runs in 43 deliveries and provided the defending champions with just the start they needed. Mohsin Khan and Avesh Khan were the only two bowlers who managed to take wickets, with one wicket each to their name.
During the run chase, Lucknow got off to a good start as Kyle Mayers and Quinton de Kock scored 48 and 70 runs, respectively. However, the rest of the batters could not amount to much as they crumbled under the relentless attack of Gujarat’s bowling lineup.
