Glamorgan fast bowler Michael Neser finished with figures of 7/32, including a hat-trick, as the hosts took a 139-run first-innings lead over Yorkshire in the ongoing County Championship. Yorkshire were bundled out for 106, leaving Jonny Bairstow on 20 not out. Consequently, he raised the eyebrows of the Australian selectors leading to a selection conundrum ahead after he was overlooked for the upcoming Ashes 2023 series.
Glamorgan scored 245 in their first innings, but Yorkshire's first-innings effort was ruined by Neser's swing and pace. By the end of a rain-affected Day 2, the visitors had reached 57/2 and took a 196-run lead.
Bairstow had hit a couple of stunning boundaries in Yorkshire's first innings since injuring his leg in September 2022 After that, Neser started doing his job as he dismissed Dawid Malan for 25. He then dismissed George Hill and Dom Bess in the same manner.
Later, the Australian bowler removed Jordan Thompson to complete his first-ever 7-wicket haul. Meanwhile, the last man, Ben Coad, was run out by a direct strike from Kiran Carlson.
It's a special moment to get that first first-class hat trick: Neser
Michael Naser reflected on his maiden first-class hat trick for Yorkshire. He said that it was a special moment for him to earn his first first-class hat trick and second in his career. He went on to describe how he was able to pick the wickets during the rain-soaked contest.
"It's a special moment to get that first first-class hat trick, the second in my career (after one in the Big Bash). The out-swinger wasn't doing that much, so I bowled one 'innie' and it went quite big, I decided to stick with it and fortunately, it worked," Neser told BBC Sport Wales.
"I was just thinking about trying to hit the stumps, fortunately, it swung enough. We're in a great position and our batters did a great job in the first innings to rack up the total we did on a tricky wicket," he added.
