Although Kolkata Knight Riders were handed their second successive defeat on the trot when they squared off against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede, they found a hero in all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer. Following his momentous century, former England batting star Kevin Pietersen lauded praise on the KKR batter.

Nitish Rana's KKR posted a competitive total on the board, which was made possible by Venkatesh Iyer's trailblazing century. The towering batter made his intentions clear from the get-go and did not spare any Mumbai Indians' bowler during his punishing innings. Kevin Pietersen labelled him a 360-degree player as he can access all parts of the ground with his repertoire of shots.

"He is a tall guy; he stands on top of the bounce because of his height. I'm very impressed with the way he played off the back foot too, and he also doesn't get bogged down by the spinners. He is a 360 kind of player", Kevin Pietersen said on Star Sports.

Pietersen remembered one of Iyer's innings during the pandemic-hit season, where he played some eye-catching shots. Notably, Iyer's century was only the second-ever century by a KKR player since the inception of the tournament, with the first being Brendon McCullums' iconic 158* in the first-ever IPL match in 2008.

"He is not afraid to play all around the ground. It was in Dubai that we first saw him in the IPL where he lit the stage up when he played a couple of pull shots and a couple of drives. I looked at him and thought 'Okay, this guy has some star quality' and today, we have seen it", the former RCB star added.

Iyer's heroics went in vain as the home side made a mockery of the target after a dominant display by the Mumbai batters, chasing down the target comfortably with more than two overs to spare.
