The first two Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ended in favour of India. India won the first Test against Australia by an innings and 132 runs in Nagpur. The hosts beat Australia in the second Test by six wickets and thus retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The win over Australia in the second Test has helped them inch towards the World Test Championship (WTC) final spot.

After an emphatic win over Australia in the second Test, India hope to make it to the WTC final berth. India need to win one out of the remaining two matches of the series to seal the deal. After winning the Delhi Test, India’s points percentage has climbed from 61.66 to 64.06. India hold the second position and have won ten out of 16 matches, with four losses and two draws.

Australia, on the other hand, need to avoid a 4-0 whitewash to keep their chances alive to qualify for the WTC final but if they lose 4-0 then they will be dependent on other results. The table toppers saw their points percentage drop from 70.83 PCT to 66.67 after losing to India in the second Test.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka also have the chance to take part in the decider in June. For that, Sri Lanka have to win their next two Tests against New Zealand.

What are India’s chances of WTC final qualification now?

  • Team India needs only one win out of the remaining two Tests against Australia to book their spot in the WTC final. The hosts showed complete domination in the first two Tests against Australia and easily won both of them.
  • Australia need to avoid a 4-0 whitewash against India in the ongoing series. Australia should win one out of the remaining two matches to qualify for the WTC final.
  • Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have to win their last two Tests against New Zealand to stay in the race.
