Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said that the idea of organising the Women’s Premier League originated in his tenure and it finally came into being in the last few months, with the BCCI announcing the media rights and the fees that each franchise has paid to own and operate a team in the league.

The 50-year-old stated that women’s cricket has a lot of potential in India and thus, he believes that the tournament will not end up having five teams only. He mentioned that in the coming years, more franchises will join and make it a grand success.

“We together have done the brainstorming during the time when I was BCCI president. I was President, Rajeev Shukla was VP, Jay Shah was Secretary, Arun Dhumal was Treasurer. We did this planning at that time, and now it was implemented. That has to be done. I am not surprised about Women's IPL as in India cricket has a big portion. And in the coming days, I don't think it will be limited to only 5 teams,” said Ganguly while talking to India Today.

The former India skipper also stated that he has given a lot of effort to help women’s cricket grow in the country. However, because of the pandemic, he could not do much as everything came to a standstill. Nevertheless, he hailed the women cricketers, coaches and staff for doing a tremendous job in the meantime.

“I have given much effort and time for Women's Cricket. In 3 years I and Jay both have given efforts for it. But in between there was Covid-19 for 2 years. Many things were stuck due to that. I have seen a lot of development in women's cricket in the last three years. And I give due credit to our women cricketers, coaches and staff who have done a tremendous job,” he added.

Meanwhile, the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League will begin in the month of March and the entire tournament is reported to take place in Mumbai.
