Defending champions Gujarat Titans might not have made the headlines by signing any of the big-money names in the IPL 2023 auction, but they were the most successful team in terms of acquiring their targets. The IPL 2022 champions signed seven players in the recently concluded auction, landing all the players they bid for, registering a 100% success rate in front of the hammer.
Hardik Pandya's Gujarat Titans completed a fairytale finish to their inaugural season earlier this year after defeating Rajasthan Royals to lift their maiden IPL title. The newly introduced franchise headed to the IPL 2023 auction with a sizeable purse of 19.25 crores. However, instead of tangling in bidding wars for some of the most coveted players ahead of next year's IPL, the think tank of the defending champions stuck to smart purchases.
They signed all the seven players they bid for with 4.45 crores still remaining in their kitty, while the other teams were entangled in an unprecedented bidding war for the likes of Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, and Cameron Green. They bagged the vastly experienced Kiwi batting ace Kane Williamson for his base price of 2 crores. Young Indian pacer Shivam Mavi was their most expensive signing at six crores, while the capture of Ireland's fast bowling sensation Joshua Little for 4.4 crores was another testament to their savvy auction strategy.
Apart from the Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad also had a successful auction as they managed to land 13 of the 14 players they bid for in Kochi. Ben Stokes was the only player that escaped them as four-time champions Chennai Super Kings broke the bank for the mercurial English all-rounder, signing him for a record fee of 16.25 crores.
