Australia's T20 title defense ended in disappointment after the reigning champions failed to make it out from the Super 12 stage of the competition. Former Australian cricketer and their most successful skipper Ricky Ponting expects a change in leadership after their forgettable campaign, naming Glenn Maxwell as the 'logical' choice to take over as captain.

The defending champions bowed out from the tournament after England defeated Sri Lanka to seal their semi-final spot. The Australian team, who had a patchy tournament had themselves to blame after their meek surrender against Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand plummetted their net run rate.

Former skipper Ricky Ponting suggested that the management will need to look forward for this current team with skipper Aaron Finch's future uncertain in the T20I setup. He stated that Glenn Maxwell is the most likely choice to lead the side given his experience in the role in the IPL and BBL.

“He’s obviously done a fair bit in IPL and in BBL. I think that’s probably the logical one. I couldn’t see Pat Cummins wanting to take it on. I was a little bit surprised he took the one-day stuff on, to be honest as well just with workload and stuff and how many games he potentially misses, so maybe you look to Maxy. I saw Mitchell Marsh last week had taken his name out. He said he wanted to play and not have to worry about it. I think in the current group, it probably would be Maxy,” Ponting was quoted by Fox Sports.

Stuart Clark reckons the CA needs to do a bit of 'soul searching' after the disappointing T20 World Cup

Meanwhile, Ponting's teammate and former Australian pacer Stuart Clark put forward Cameron Green's name for the leadership role. Although he reckoned the board will need to look at long-term plans, Green's appointment might lead them into a new era.

“There’s no one young in that team. Other than Cameron Green everyone else is over the age of 29. It’s not an easy fix to click your fingers and make it all simple. I think there’s a little bit of soul searching for Cricket Australia in that format. Maybe Cameron Green is the man,” Clark said on BBC’s Test Match Special.
