When Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022, tension started mounting in the Indian cricketing circle as the speedster was India’s obvious choice at the death overs.
Out of the possible candidates, Mohammed Shami was the favourite one to replace Bumrah but his lack of game time was a major concern.
However, he fought against all odds, proved his fitness at the NCA and finally is part of India’s squad for the all-important event.
Even though he is yet to train with the Indian team in Australia, captain Rohit Sharma is keeping an eye on the 32-year-old. Speaking to the journalists in a press conference ahead of the mega tournament, the Indian captain shared a massive update on Shami and spoke about his fitness and recovery process.
“As far as Mohammed Shami is concerned, He first got COVID, so he was at his home. He was called to the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He had been training hard at the NCA for the past ten days. And finally, he is in Brisbane. The Indian team will reach Brisbane soon as we have a practice session there. He'll train with the team.
Whatever we have heard about Shami so far is very positive. His recovery has been really good. He had some bowling sessions and completed those with full intensity. So all and all, things are good with Shami,” said the captain about India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the 2015 and 2019 World Cup.
There is no point of talking about it every time and creating that pressure: Rohit Sharma on India vs Pakistan clash
There’s always a buzz in the air whenever India play Pakistan as fans across nations treat it as a cricketing festival. After a 1-1 draw (both teams won a match each) in the Asia Cup 2022, the two giants of the cricketing world will once again come face-to-face on October 23 in Super 12 of the T20 World Cup at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Now despite all the hype, Indian captain Rohit Sharma is not ready to talk about it and create unnecessary pressure on himself or on the team. In the press conference, the captain also revealed the kind of conversation the India and Pakistan players have in the middle.
“We understand the importance of the game, but there's no point in just talking about it all the time and creating pressure on yourself. Whenever we meet (members of India and Pakistan), like recently we did during the Asia Cup before meeting here in Australia, we ask each other 'How are things at home?,' 'How's the family?' and all that.
Whenever I meet players from Pakistan, this is what we usually talk. The previous generation players, our seniors, who have played before us have also told us to keep talking and indulging. We talk about our homes, and our lives, like which new car have you purchased, or which new car are you going to purchase (laughs). That is what we talk,” the Indian captain added.
