India have started the three-match T20I series against South Africa with a thumping victory by eight wickets at the Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, thanks to an outstanding spell of bowling from Arshdeep Singh and Deepak Chahar upfront. The decision to bowl after winning the toss from skipper Rohit Sharma worked out quite well as half of the side were dismissed for Proteas for just nine runs within the third over.
Both the seamers produced a master class of swing bowlers and the likes of Rilee Rossouw, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs were all dismissed for a golden duck. Aiden Markram (25) and Wayne Parnell (24) showed some resistance for a while to restore things however, it was only a matter of time until Harshal Patel got Markram.
Keshav Maharaj played a gritty innings of 41 off 35 balls with five fours and two sixes and he helped the Proteas to a respectable score of 106 for 8 which looked impossible at one stage of the game. While Ravi Ashwin bowled an economical spell, all the other bowlers chipped in with wickets and Arshdeep was the pick of the lot with 3 for 32 in his four overs.
India lose skipper Rohit Sharma early
Chasing low totals could be tricky at times, and it proved to an extend this time for India as they lost the skipper Rohit Sharma early for a two-ball duck. Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje were going through a fine spell of bowling and they picked another big scalp in the form of Virat Kohli, the inform batter. At 17 for 2, all that India needed was to take time and build a partnership while KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav provided that.
The duo kept picking up the singles while Suryakumar was reluctant to cut down his aggressive stint. It paid off as Suryakumar brought down the required rate considerably while Rahul accelerated once he got his eye in. The Proteas spinners looked out of socks and the two batters reached unbeaten half centuries to complete an emphatic victory for the Indian side with 20 balls left.
